Using Local Offline Cubes

If the users do not use the OLAP services of OLAP Server and still wish to create local cubes and create and use multi-dimensional query on these local cubes, users can do so through Microsoft Query. Microsoft Query is an optional component of Office 2000 and Office 2002 is installed on specific request from user. OLAP services are not part of MS Office 2000 / 2002. ERPJewels creates a data query file (.dqy) which users can open with MS Excel or Microsoft Query. Microsoft Query is very easy to use simple SQL to extract data from any kind of data source. From Microsoft query users can directly create the Offline cube (.cub file) and create and OLAP query (.oqy). With this OLAP query, Office Data connection (.odc) file can be created which allows user to play for the offline cube in internet explorer in a user friendly manner.

Microsoft OLAP Services includes functionality for local cubes that exist outside of the OLAP Server to provide for offline data analysis. The local PivotTable Services plays an important role in building local cubes and in managing access to the cubes (through cache management).

The PivotTable service performs variety of functions.

      * PivotTable service functions as a multidimensional data provider for local
        offline cubes.

      * PivotTable Service allows a cube to be created from OLAP Servers using MS Query.

      * PivotTable Service acts as an OLAP client, allowing users offline access to        multidimensional data on local computers.

From the perspective of OLAP Client application development, the primary interface with a local cube is not significantly different than programming to an OLAP Server.

Similar to connecting to an OLAP Server, the connection string to a local cube file must contain the Data Source and Provider parameters. However, in case of a local cube, the Data source property contains the path to the *.cub file.

Once the connection is established, retrieving metadata information from the cube, executing MDX queries on the cube, and retrieving data sets on the cube are essentially the same as programming to an OLAP Server with the following exceptions:

      * PivotTable Service works only with a single cube partition. Therefore, the Catalog object is not relevant.

      * PivotTable Service does not have an intrinsic aggregation engine capable of recalculating aggregate values along levels of a dimension.

      * PivotTable Service does not have functionality for defining users, roles, data access rules, virtual cubes, and global named members.
